Blacksmith Fork River Trail, 1 January, 2026

Our low snow-pack and drought conditions are concerning to all, but on this day we experienced wet weather.

Seven hikers geared up for the predicted rainy day and started the New Year with a refreshing walk.  From the parking area at the mouth of Blacksmith Fork Canyon, we crossed UT-101, over the Blacksmith Fork River bridge to the Blacksmith Fork River Trail. Continuing upstream, we soon passed a municipal water facility, a “waterfall” (the water source is Porcupine Reservoir by way of the Highline Canal), the Bandit’s Cove disc golf course, and the old Civilian Conservation Corps camp as clouds drifted along the cliffs. The moss was a brilliant green splashed against muted grays and browns. The river was icy along the edges and around the rocks. At 2.4 miles we took a short break at the gate before heading back to an anticipated New Year’s brunch in Hyrum, generously hosted by Brent & Katie. It was delicious!

Trip Summary:
  • Participants: Susan, Brent J., Michelle, Brent L. David, Jane & Dave (leaders)
  • Drove 10 miles to the Division of Wildlife Resources trailhead, 1 mile east of Hyrum on Hwy 101
  • Started hiking about 10:30 am and returned to the trailhead about 1:00 pm
  • Weather: light rain and cloudy sky most of the day, temperatures in the 40’s, no wind, good air quality
  • Trail conditions: wet but not muddy, occasional ice patches, no snow, met 1 human & 2 dogs
  • Hiked about 5 miles roundtrip with about 300 feet of elevation gain

Thanks to Jane for the narrative and photos, Michelle for photos, and David for GPS data.
