Franklin Basin Ski/Snowshoe, February 5, 2012

Fourteen people participated a pleasant trip across the meadow and up the hillside of Franlklin Basin.   As usual, Dave W. and Dave P. were on skis, and Dan, Jane, Kathy, Christine, Jeanne, Tim, Jim, Kyle, Norma, Rich, Catherine, and Anne used snowshoes.

We left the groomed trail after crossing the river and headed across the meadow to a frozen and snow-covered pond, and then diagonally up the ridge between White Pine and Steam Mill canyons. The two skiers had trouble climbing the steeper terrain until they put climbing skins onto their bottom of their skis, but the snowshoers had little difficulty. The group stopped for lunch on an open slope overlooking the Basin. The overall trip was 3.3 miles distance, with 550 feet of climbing.
