White Pine Ridge, 23 February, 2025

Fourteen Cahe Hikers joined the Franklin basin snowshoe/ski outing.

We started out shortly before 11 with partly cloudy skies and pleasant temperatures. The snow was soft and fairly new making for a good start. We took the usual route up the Franklin Basin Road, crossed the bridge and turned left to cross the  lower meadow. Regrouping there we started climbing through the woods then up and across the open hillside.

We followed a generally southwest track through woods until stopping for lunch at about 12:30. Light winds, partly cloudy skies and fairly warm temperatures made for a comfortable rest and conversation. We had traveled about 1.3 miles and were at about 7050 ft elevation.

After lunch most of the hikers returned along the previous track, arriving at the trailhead about 2:00.  Several others continued through the woods toward the southwest. Before long everyone had turned back, some taking a separate route before rejoining the others to return by the previous track.  It was snowing by the time everyone was back at the traihead about 3:00.

Trip Summary:
  • 14 participants (four skiers and ten snowshoers): Austin, Ralph, Sue, Bruce, Linda, Brent L, Michelle, David, Teresa, Deanna, Dave W, Jane, Dave P, and Dan (leader)
  • Drove 25 miles to the Franklin Basin Winter Trailhead
  • Started on the trail about 10:50, lunch about 12:30 - 1:00, most were back at the trailhead about 2:00
  • Overcast skies with afternoon snow, calm winds, temperature in the low 30s
  • Most hikers traveled about 2.6 miles with 400 feet of ascent, some went about 3.4 miles with 500 ft. of ascent.
