Home Leatham Hollow, 29 September, 2024 Nine people (Dave P, Dave W, Deb, Jane P, Jane E, Joan, Kamren, Susan, and Ralph (leader)) met at the Smith’s Marketplace parking lot on Main Street and carpooled 16 miles via Blacksmith Fork Canyon and Left Hand Fork to the Leatham Hollow trailhead. The temperatures were pleasant although a bit elevated for late September. The fall colors greeted us as we started up the trail and accompanied the group the entire hike. The hike started following a dry creek bed with nice views of rugged cliffs. About a mile up the trail we noticed many wasps as the water from the spring appeared. This appeared to be a popular watering spot as the summer and fall have been very dry. After about 1.4 miles of moderate climbing, we reached the Leatham Hollow Spring. The group stopped for a short break while one hiker climbed up the hillside to the northeast to locate the spring source. Shortly after leaving the spring, we reached the long gentle switchbacks that work up the slopes. After about another mile we left the trail for a short hike up to a scenic outlook spot with great views of Blacksmith Fork Canyon. After a short break there we continued up the trail, stopping occasionally for a short rest and to enjoy the great views along the trail. We reached the top of Leatham Hollow about 12:15 p.m. and then proceeded to bushwhack along the ridge to the southwest to a point overlooking Millville Canyon. This spot provided a great look across Cache Valley to the Wellsville Mountains. The group found a shady spot for lunch with a nice breeze and spent about a half hour eating lunch and enjoying the weather and views. After lunch the group returned to the trailhead. Along the way we located some hawthorn bushes that several hikers were looking for after first being noticed on a winter hike earlier in the year. We reached the trailhead about 3:00 p.m. We encountered three hikers on their way up when we had about 1 mile remaining. There were several UTV ("side-by-side") off-road vehicles on the roads at the top of Millville canyon. Trip Summary:
