Naomi Peak, 8 September 2024

Ten hikers met at the usual rendezvous of Smith’s Marketplace at 8 am on Sunday. Deb drove over from Bear Lake to meet us at the Tony Grove parking lot at 9 am. The parking lot was much calmer than Labor Day weekend, with multiple open spots. We used our “Old Geezer” Forest Service passes for no-fee parking.

In contrast to the 2018 Naomi Peak trip that Teresa led, which had “recently repaired signposts clearly directing hikers”, this 2024 hike depended on Jane’s prior felt pen scratchings on a post to direct hikers on Naomi Peak versus White Pine Lake routes.  We enjoyed examining rock formations and the surprising diversity of blooms this late in the season.

The morning temperature was mild and then started to warm, but part way up, the clouds came over, a cold wind blew in, and the rain started. A rapid application of rain coats by three of the hikers was enough to halt the inclement weather, and the sun came back out for everyone. Two hikers decided to stop below the final steep ascent section and found a spot to eat lunch and wait for the peak baggers. Everyone else enjoyed lunch and the 360 degree view from the top of the tallest peak in the Bear River Range. Thanks to Catherine for carrying up fine chocolates in a cold bag to share with all of us and another group.

The trek back was easier but we still had to watch our footing on gravel and loose rocks. We were back at Tony Grove by 2:30 pm, and headed to Logan soon after.

Trip Summary:
  • Eleven participants: Dave P., Kathy, Susan, Brent L., Chris, Kamren, Deanna, Catherine, Jim, Deb, and Teresa (the leader)
  • Drove 29 miles to the Tony Grove trailhead in Logan Canyon
  • Started hiking from Tony Grove at 9:00, then a lunch break at the peak, back to the vehicles at 2:30 pm and Logan before 3:30 pm
  • Hiked about 7 miles with 1900 feet of gain to Naomi Peak at 9983 ft
  • Temperature in the 70's with variable skies, and a short period of wind and rain

Thanks to Teresa for the narrative, photos and GPS data, Susan and Dave P for photos.
