Mill Hollow Hike, 9 March, 2025

If on
e of your goals in life is to experience the perfect spring hike, then today was your day.  Fourteen hikers set out for a boot/spike/snowshoe hike from Spring Hollow to Mill Hollow with  Bridger Look-off and some coyote and red fox tracks thrown in for variety.

The group carpooled from Logan to the lower parking lot at Spring Hollow.  Twelve of us walked through the campground and group areas to the upper trail. David and Michelle  split from us at the parking area, choosing to walk up the Riverside NJature Trail.  I believe they were humming the Fleetwood Mac classic song "Go Your Own Way" as they left the parking area.

Trail conditions varied from snow to ice to frozen earth and then some mud.  There was no need for snowshoes, but some areas of ice were best traversed with spikes.  The day was sunny with moderate temperatures staying a little above  30 degrees and no wind.

We stopped at our usual lunch rock, but due to the "Spring Forward" time change and the relative speed of the hike, we elected to have a brief snack break and save lunch for a  later.

Trip Summary:
  • 14 participants: Brent L.(leader), Dave P, Bree, Linda, David, Michelle, Jane, Bruce, Corey, Kathy, Ralph, Austin, Brent J, Hiro.
  • Drove 7 miles to the Spring Hollow Campground  parking area.
  • Started hiking about 10:15, rested in Mill Hollow 11:30 - 11:50, back at the vehicles at 1:25.
  • Several hikers stayed and ate lunch at the campground before returning to Logan about 2:00.
  • Clear skies, calm winds and pleasant temperatures.  This was a "boot hike" so snowshoes were not needed.
  • Hiked about 3.7 miles over four named trails (Spring Hollow Trail, Mill Hollow Trail, Bridger Look-off Trail and River Trail) with about 650 feet of elevation

Thanks to Brent for the narrative, photos, and GPS data, Bree and Kathy for photos, and Ralph and Jane for photos and GPS data..
