2016 Summer Activity Schedule

Summer hikes are scheduled from May to mid-October.  Participants meet at the southwest corner of the Smith's Marketplace parking lot at 750 North Main Street in Logan, Utah.  Participants should bring food, water, appropriate clothing, and a donation for gas and parking fees, where applicable.

It is the participant’s responsibility to be sure the trip is within his/her ability and stamina, and to have adequate equipment.  In most cases the hiker should be prepared with sturdy boots, hat, first aid kit, rain protection, insect repellent, extra clothing, food, water, and optional hiking poles. Deer Fence The Cache Hikers will host a 5-mile Saturday hike along the Deer Fence Trail from Blacksmith Fork to Providence Canyon with an optional 3-mile extension to Dry Canyon. This easy/moderate warm-up hike (600 feet of elevation) provides great views of the Wellsville Mountains as it passes the Millville Predator Research Facility, springs and rock formations. Meet at 8:00 and expect to return before noon.  Car shuttle required.

Wood Camp Waterfall The Cache Hikers will host a Saturday hike to a seasonal waterfall in Wood Camp Hollow. This is a moderate hike, about 3 ½ miles round trip with 1800 feet of elevation, including about 2½ miles over unmaintained trails (long pants recommended). Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 1:00 p.m.

Maughan Hollow The Cache Hikers will host a Sunday hike in Maughan Hollow. Located in the Right Hand Fork of Logan Canyon, hikers will enjoy early summer wildflowers and great views as they travel up Maughan Hollow and return via Little Cottonwood Canyon. This is a moderate hike of 5-6 miles with about 1000 feet of elevation. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 2:00 p.m.

National Trails Day Join Cache County and US Forest Service on a National Trails Day activity to improve trails in Providence Canyon on Saturday. Logan Canyon to Green Canyon
The Cache Hikers will host a Sunday day hike up the Wind Cave and Wind Cave Way trails, over the ridge and down the Beirdneau Trail to the Preston Valley Trailhead. This hike features open views of Logan Canyon on an ascent of 2200 feet followed by a forested descent into Green Canyon, a trip of about 6 miles. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 4:00 p.m.

Spawn Creek Trail Maintenance The Cache Hikers will host a trail maintenance day on the Spawn Creek Trail on Saturday. Clear brush and rocks until noon, have lunch and hike back to the Temple Fork trailhead. Wear sturdy boots, and bring clippers, loppers, gloves if you have them. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 2:00 pm.

Jardine Juniper The Cache Hikers will host a Saturday hike to the Jardine Juniper. This moderate/moderately strenuous 10-mile hike gradually gains 1900 feet to the famous 1500-year-old Rocky Mountain Juniper tree, with wildflowers and canyon views along the way. Tony Grove to US-89 The Cache Hikers will host a Monday trip from Tony Grove to the Bunchgrass Creek Trailhead. This is a moderate 6-mile hike with 2200 feet of descent. Hikers will initially follow the White Pine Lake trail before turning down the Bunchgrass Creek drainage. Expect wildflowers and a seasonal pond as we follow animal paths down this seldom-travelled route. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 3:00 p.m.  Car shuttle required.

Beirdneau Peak via upper Green Canyon The Cache Hikers will host a trip to Beirdneau Peak on Sunday. This is a strenuous hike, about 13 miles and 4500 feet of elevation gain as we travel up Green Canyon, west along the ridge to Beirdneau Peak and down to the Preston Valley Trailhead. Expect wildflowers and great views from the peak. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 6:00 p.m.  Car shuttle required.

Doubletop Peak The Cache Hikers will host a hike to Doubletop Peak on Sunday. This is a strenuous 8-mile hike with 3000 feet of elevation gain over segments of unmaintained trails, from Steep Hollow to Doubletop and return. Expect wildflowers and a great view from this seldom-visited peak. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 4:00 p.m.

Coldwater Spring Loop The Cache Hikers will host a hike to Coldwater Spring on Sunday. Traveling in a loop from Tony Grove via the Bear Hollow trail, hikers enjoy summer wildflowers and scenic views. Temple Fork Sawmill The Cache Hikers will host a Saturday hike along Temple Fork to the historic sawmill site. This is an easy/moderate hike, about 6 miles round-trip and 700 ft. elevation gain, and hikers may choose to shorten this hike for an earlier return to Logan.

Mt Naomi Peak The Cache Hikers will host a hike to Naomi Peak on Sunday. This is a moderately strenuous 6.5 mile round trip with an elevation gain about 1900 feet to the highest peak in the Bear River Range. Enjoy views from the summit and wildflowers and birds along the way.  Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 4:00 p.m.

Tony Grove to Steam Mill Canyon The Cache Hikers will host a Sunday hike from Tony Grove to Steam Mill Canyon. This is a moderately strenuous hike of about 10 miles with 1500 feet of elevation gain and 2800 feet of descent. Expect to see an historic boiler after hiking about 1.5 miles over seldom-traveled Shorty’s Cutoff. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 6:00 p.m.  Car shuttle required.

Bunchgrass Creek

The Cache Hikers will host a Saturday hike to Bunchgrass Creek via Tony Grove and White Pine Canyon. This moderately strenuous hike which requires a car shuttle, will be about 11 miles and 1000 feet elevation gain. Two lakes, peak views, and fall colors should make an interesting day.Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 6:00 p.m.

Crimson Trail

The Cache Hikers will host a Sunday hike along the Crimson Trail. This is a moderate loop, approximately 5 miles and 1000 feet elevation gain with a return on the Riverside Nature Trail. Switchbacks take hikers to the top of the China Wall limestone cliff with views of Logan Canyon and the Wind Caves. Meet at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return about 1:00 p.m.
