Name White Pine Lake Trail
USFS Trail Number
025
Geographic Area Tony Grove, upper Logan Canyon
Length
3.7 miles from the Tony Grove parking lot to White Pine Lake
Description
Access via the Tony Grove parking lot, located 7 miles west of US 89 in Logan Canyon.  From US 89, turn west onto the road to Tony Grove just south of mile marker 481.  Currently (2015) there is  $6 per car parking fee.  The trail leads north from the parking lot, climbing gently as it passes a trail register and arriving at a junction at mile 0.25.  The right trail fork is the the most direct route to White Pine Lake, passing through large meadows and mostly open terrain, arriving at the ridge overlooking White Pine creek at mile 2.3.  From here the trail descends to White Pine Creek at mile 3.3, arriving at a junction with the White Pine-Bunchgrass Canyon trail heading downstream to the east.   White Pine Lake is 1/3 mile west of the junction.  Side trails lead to a campsites and a backcountry toilet (again functional in 2015).  For a change of scenery on the way back, we recommend the side trail connecting with the Mt. Naomi Peak National Recreation Trail (see map and sign photo, below).

From White Pine Lake, hikers (and bikers) may travel east along White Pine Creek on the
White Pine-Bunchgrass Canyon trail, arriving at either the Bunchgrass Trailhead on US-89 or the Steam Mill trailhead in Franklin Basin.  Another option would be to travel north to Steam Mill Canyon over un-maintained trails, then east to Franklin Basin.

The White Pine Lake Trail is heavily used and White Pine Lake is the most popular backpacking destination in our area, often crowded with multiple groups and dozens of campers.   Irresponsible hikers have been short-cutting switchbacks and straying from the designated trail, leading to increased erosion and needless maintenance work.
