Home Tony Grove Creek, 15 February, 2024 The Tony Grove Creek outing was attended by ten fortunate adventurers. I say fortunate because the weather couldn't have been more favorable. The group made it to the Tony Grove Winter Trailhead about 10:45 a.m. after a 22 mile carpool up the canyon and were met with clear blue skies and a temperature of 30 degrees. The group of two skiers, seven snowshoers, and one split boarder made their way up the Lewis M Turner Campground road for 0.3 miles before joining the old road to Tony Grove. After leaving the campground area we had to "break" a fresh trail through several inches of new snow. At the 1-mile point, the group stopped near the creek crossing to consider an alternate route to the current Tony Grove road. The alternate, suggested by Dave W, continues to follow the main branch of Tony Grove Creek and avoids a steep, south facing slope which could pose an avalanche risk. The group decided to take our usual route below the steep slope and left the option open to return via the alternate route. After spacing out the group for safety reasons, we traversed the slope and gathered again at a switchback 1.3 miles into the trip. From here, the group climbed towards our traditional lunch spot on a south-facing slope overlooking Tony Grove Creek, and what would become our return route. We ate lunch at 12:30, having traveled about 1.8 miles. The skies were still clear and the temperature had climbed to 40 degrees. A slight wind from the south was just enough to be heard through the trees, but not enough to bother the group. After a lunch break we climbed another 0.2 miles to meet the Tony Grove road. Instead of heading north-east on the road to do "Laurel's Lovely Lollipop Loop" (see our 2022 trip), we headed a couple of hundred feet to the southwest and dropped down off the northeast side of the road to meet Tony Grove Creek. From here the group continued down the snow-covered creek to the spot where we had stopped to contemplate our route choice on the way up. After regrouping, we made our way back down the old road we had previously broken and back to our vehicles. Temperatures were up to the mid 40s at the cars and we had completed about 4 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. Trip Summary:
